D-Hop Sweepstakes Heat Up!

Will the Bills convince the All-Pro Wideout to Ring-Chase?

Wagons Circled Staff

The race to sign free-agent receiver DeAndre Hopkins has the New England Patriots as the favored landing spot, slightly ahead of their AFC East rivals, the Buffalo Bills. Following his visit with the Patriots last month, it appears that the Patriots and the Tennessee Titans are the primary contenders for the 31-year-old wideout.

However, NFL insider Jeff Darlington suggests that the Bills shouldn't be completely counted out in the pursuit of the former Arizona Cardinal. During an appearance on the "Rich Eisen Show" on Monday, Darlington emphasized that the Bills have genuine interest in Hopkins and would welcome him if he chooses to join.

"While the Bills do hold a strong admiration for DeAndre Hopkins and believe he would be a valuable addition, they may not be willing to meet his financial demands," Darlington explained. "If he prioritizes chasing a championship, there's a place for him in Buffalo."

It's important to note the conditionality of this statement, as it currently appears that Hopkins will ultimately choose the highest bidder. The Patriots have the most salary cap space available among the two teams involved in the Hopkins pursuit, estimated at around $17.7 million according to OverTheCap. In contrast, the Titans have approximately $8 million and the Bills have $5 million, making the Patriots a significant contender for his services.

Nevertheless, Buffalo presents an appealing destination due to quarterback Josh Allen and the presence of wide receivers Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis. Even if they cannot offer him the desired contract, the Bills have been in the Super Bowl conversation since acquiring Diggs. However, their recent attempts at advancing beyond the AFC Championship game have fallen short, likely due to a lack of playmakers beyond Diggs. Signing Hopkins would address this issue by providing them with two top-tier receivers and widening the gap between them and the Patriots in the division.

Ultimately, the decision lies with Hopkins and his career objectives. Does he prioritize a championship ring or a lucrative deal? While the Bills offer him the best opportunity for a Super Bowl, the Patriots can offer more financial compensation.
